[ Ballantyne / Hudson Bay; or, Everyday Life in the Wilds of North America ]
This book, first published in 1848 (Edinbugh: Blackwood), is based on Ballantyne's experience during a 6-year stint working for the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada. The text is taken from the 1905 edition published by T. Nelson (Edinburgh and New York).
The work's only reference to Newfoundlands occurs in the discussion of Indian experiences in trapping wolves, and how one Indian advances upon a trapped wolf:
The fierce brute, which is larger than a Newfoundland dog, strains every nerve and sinew to break its chains; while its eyes glisten in the uncertain light, and foam curls from its
blood-red mouth. (86 - 87)
