October, 1913, issue included this brief note — "Dog Plunges into Ocean and Rescues Child — about a dog leaping off a pier to rescue his owner's child:

Rover, a Newfoundland dog, plunged forty feet into the water from the end of a pier at Venice, Calif., and saved the life of the eight-year-old daughter of his mistress, Mrs. Frank Hartley.
The girl and the dog were roaming on the pier when the child started to climb the railing. The dog seized her dress and tried to pull her back. The child persisted, and when she reached the top of the railing lost her balanace and fell into the ocean. The dog instantly plunged after her, caught her clothing in his teeth, and brought her safely ashore. (478)
