[ Gentleman's Magazine ]

The Gentleman's Magazine was an important and influential monthly magazine in the 18th and 19th Centuries; it began in 1731, ceased regular publication in 1907, and shut down completely in 1922.

The March, 1843, issue featured a third in a series of articles about notable timber houses in England. This particular essay focused on "the very handsome and curious house of Walter Coney," a important businessman and political figure in the 15th Century. Reviewing the family history, which traces its history to the parish of Walpole, in the town of Norfolk, the author includes a footnote about the present-day representatives of the Coney family:

The representation of the Walpole branch [of the family] is said to be now vested in two brothers of the name of Coney, who gain their livelihood by the exhibition of some well-trained Newfoundland dogs, at one of the minor theatres of London. (267)
