[ London Chronicle ]

The following rather macabre news notice appeared in the London Chronicle of May 2, 1810 (volume 107, p. 423):

An extraordinary circumstance occurred last Friday; as one of Miss Goldsworthy's servants was passing through Hyde Park, he perceived a genteel woman, with a black veil over her face, on the bridge in Rotten-row; she had a basket on her arm, and appeared very much agitated; she threw the basket into the water and made off; a Newfoundland dog, which was near the water's edge, went in and brought out the basket, which, upon examination, contained a human arm and hand. Search was made after the woman who had dropped the basket, but she could not be found.
