[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The April 6, 1785 edition of The Times carried the following brief advertisement for a lost dog. What is particularly striking about this item is that it specifically identifies the dog as black, at a time when the vast majority of Newfoundlands were black-and-white:

Lost in or near Portland Place about Ten Days ago, a Small Black Newfoundland Bitch; any Person having found such a Bitch, by bringing her to Mr. Norborn, Dog Doctor, Number 2, Fox-court, St James's-Street, shall have Half-a-Guinea Reward for their trouble, and any reasonable Charge for her Keep.
