[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The edition of January 29, 1834, carried the following "for sale" announcement:
HORSE and DOG. — A gentleman, about to leave the country, is compelled to offer a very valuable and sound HORSE for SALE.. . . . Also the largest and handsomest Newfoundland Dog in England. Apply for the groom, at Groombridge's livery stables, 61 [?] High Holborn, opposite the George and Blue Boar.
I can't help but remark that "the largest and handsomest" Newfoundland in England is sold on a fairly regularly basis in the 1820s and '30s....
