[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of November 9, 1838, carried the following strange account of a Newfoundland getting into it with a donkey.

A fight, such as perhaps never been witnessed at the select place of amusement near the Barriere du Combat, in Paris, took place a few days ago incidentally in the Rue de la Madeleine, at Brussels, between a Newfoundland dog and donkey, laden with a couple of baskets. The ass, with a belligerent spirit not often exhibited by the rest of his species, completely vanquished not only the dog, but also his proprietor, who, contrary to all the known rules of fair play, came to the assistance of his favourite. Had it been possible to announce this improviso exhibition a fortnight beforehand, it would no doubt have attracted crowds of amateurs.
