[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of July 10, 1839, carried the following report from the Montreal Herald in Canada about a Newf helping rescue a woman from a burning ship.

We regret to say that there is very little doubt that more individuals were lost in the John Bull than the number which we stated yesterday. It has been ascertained that at least 16 are missing. . . . The confusion among the passengers was such that as soon as a boat could reach the steamer the rush was so great that many fell in the river. One woman caught hold of a rope tied round the neck of a Newfoundland dog, who in this instance, as in many others, behaved gallantly, and towed her ashore. . . .

The cause of the fire was not determined. Because the fire was in the engine room, the engines could not be shut off and, as this was a paddle-wheel steamer, the wheel kept turning even after the ship ran aground; some of those who had fallen into the river were drawn under the still-turning wheel and killed.
