[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of August 2, 1839, carried the following "lost Newf" notice regarding a black dog.

TWO GUINEAS REWARD. — DOG LOST, on the evening of Thursday, July 25, in the neighbourhood of Red Lion-square, Holborn, between the hours of 9 and 11 – a large black dog, of the Newfoundland breed. He has a white spot on his chest, hair rather short and curled, smooth head, dull eyes and long tail; answers to the name of Caesar. Had on a brass collar when lost with owner's name and address. Whoever will bring the dog to 24, Fitzroy-square, shall receive the above REWARD. N. B. No further reward will be offered.

It may (or may not) be worth nothing that "Red Lion-square" is where the huckersterish dog dealer John Stephen Pardy, treated extensively here at The Cultured Newf, had one of his facilities. It is less than a mile, as the crow flies, from Fitzroy Square. All of the addresses mentioned by Pardy in his "dogs for sale" advertisements are quite close together in the same section of central London.
