[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of September 28, 1840, contained a "lost Newf" notice — black coat — that manages to double as an ad for apartments for rent. Note also the name, "Carlo," a common one for Newfs in the early decades of the 19th Century in England owing to the success of an 1803 play, The Caravan, which featured a Newf named Carlo jumping into an on-stage water feature in order to rescue a drowning child.

LOST, a BLACK NEWFOUNDLAND DOG, has white breast and forepaws, named Carlo, on Monday last, TEN SHILLINGS will be given on his being restored at 40, Bernard-street, Russell-square, where respectable apartments, furnished or unfurnished, with board if required, may be obtained.
