[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The August 31, 1797 edition of The Times carried the following news item about a Newfoundland's contribution to the discovery of a homicide:
On Saturday last an inquisition was held in Manchester, before N. MILNES, Esq. Coroner, on view of the body of a female child, found the preceding evening in a pit near Allport-town, with a cord or piece of tape tied round its neck, and a stone suspended from it. The Jury, after mature deliberation, found a verdict of Wilful Murder against Elizabeth Bullock, and she was consequently committed to Lancaster to take her trial at the next assizes. A large Newfoundland dog belonging to a Gentleman in the neighbourhood, brought this transaction to light, by discovering the body in the pit.
