[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of April 7, 1847, carried an advertisement for a black and white Newfoundland who answers to "Carlo" — the name of the Newf in the popular 1803 play The Caravan, suggesting that the name still had popularity nearly 45 years after that play was first performed.

LOST, on the 31st of March, a BLACK and WHITE NEWFOUNDLAND DOG; answers to the name of Carlo. Whoever will bring it to 11, North Bruton-mews, shall receive TWO POUNDS REWARD. No further reward will be given.
