[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of August 31, 1847, carried a for-sale advertisement for four Newfoundlands. Color is not mentioned, but the ad is included here for its reference to the dogs being "direct from St. John's," a claim which had been made before by some commercial sellers, which may be the case here as well.

DOGS for SALE: — Two thorough-bred Newfoundland dogs and a bitch, direct from St. John's, with a pup five months old. . . . . To be seen at Victoria Cottage, Bayswater-road, near Victoria gate.

An ad will appear in The Times on February 3, 1848, offering "Two very fine Newfoundland bitches," among a number of other dogs, from the same "Victoria Cottage" location, though addressed slightly differently: "Victoria Cottage, near the Swan Tavern, Bayswater, close to Victoria-gate, Hyde-park." No mention of color.

Another ad with the same address appeared in the April 27 edition of The Times offering "three very fine young Newfoundland Dogs"; no mention of color.
