[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The edition of July 31, 1850, carried the following "for sale" ad from a commercial dog seller featuring a Newf — and the sort of hucksterish language not seen since the London dog dealer (much discussed here at The Cultured Newf) J. S. Pardy disappeared from the scene.

GIANT and the DWARF. — A magnificent NEWFOUNDLAND DOG, unequalled for size, docility, and sagacity, the most gigantic animal of the breed ever seen, and the smallest and handsomest Black and Tanned Terrier Bitch in London. They are considered the greatest contrast in the animal world of the same species. Likewise a pair of the Maltese Lion Dogs, very small and handsome, the breed so much admired by the late Queen Dowager. They are worthy of attention, and can be seen for a few days at Mr. Stephens's, White Horse livery and bait stables, Westminster-road.
