[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The edition of March 31, 1851, carried the following weird news account:
MYSTERIOUS DEATH. — On Saturday Mr. H. M. Wakley held an inquest at the King's Head, Lower-road, Islington, on the body of a man unknown, aged about 70, that was found under the following suspicious circumstances: – Thomas Clayton, employed in Mr. Crenshaw's brick-fields, Highgate-hill, stated that on Thursday he found the body in a pond where there were only two feet of water, and underneath the body was a large Newfoundland dog, with a brass collar, and its hind and fore legs secured by the ties from the deceased's shoes. . . . The jury returned a verdict, that "Deceased was found dead in a pond, but how he came by his death there was no evidence to prove." — Globe.
