[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The May 28, 1785 edition of The Times carried the following brief advertisement for a lost dog. Note the color description, essentially that of an "Irish Spotted" Newfoundland, which is quite unusual given that at this time the vast majority of Newfoundlands were black-and-white "Landseer" Newfs:

Lost on Sunday last, May 28, a large Black Newfoundland dog, has White Feet, a little White in the Forehead, the end of his Tail White, answers to the name of Lyon. Whoever brings him to Number 83, High-Street, Marybone, will have Half-a-Guinea reward. Will not be advertised any more.
