[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The edition of November 19, 1856, carried a "Newf for sale" ad. Sort of:
NEWFOUNDLAND DOG for SALE, a valuable house or yard dog. Has shortly arrived by the ship Great Britain. He is of the Labrador species, jet black and smooth haired, is very powerful, and 15 months old. Price six guineas....
This may well be a "Newfoundland" dog only in the sense that it is a dog which came from Newfoundland (as the ad takes pains to point out), not that it is a member of the Newfoundland breed. Sounds like a Labrador Retriever. Included here only for reference.
