[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The January 7, 1805 edition of The Times carried the following gruesome notice of a Newfoundland behaving in a very un-Newfoundland-like way:

On Tuesday last, a Gentleman, who resides in the vicinity of Curzon-street, dined with a friend at Perrin's Hotel, in Duke-street. The latter, who lives near Portman-square, brought with him a large Newfoundland dog. The animal lay quiet under the table until after dinner, when his master's friend having made some jocular observations in rather an elevated tone of voice, the dog, thinking, no doubt, that they were quarreling, flew suddenly at his master's friend, and tore off his nose and upper lip, and otherwise mangled and disfigured his face in a most shocking manner, before the unfortunate gentleman could be extricated.
