[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

On April 12, 1864, The Times carried a report on the Battle of Dybbøl, part of a war between the Prussians and the Danes; the war was terrifically destructive, but this report includes an aside about a rural area nearby that was spared the devastation wrought by the Prussian artillery:

The Newfoundland dog chained in yon corner of the vast farmyard is rather whining than barking, not by any means angy at the presence of so many strangers [i.e., billetted tropps], but very much grieved that no one should take notice of him.
