[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The October 26, 1869 edition of The Times published a long account of a travel-writer's impressions of San Francisco, California. Among the many sights described is a sunset over the Pacific Ocean:\
The sun set in the Pacific with a curious refaction which made it appear double, and then floods of purple, copper, and orange light were poured upon the sea and shore, which made the scene marvellously beautiful for a few minutes. Its strangeness was heightened to me by scores of seals, which were barking like Newfoundland dogs on the rocks, and strings of pelicans, which flew heavily over the waves.
