[ London Times ]
This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
The February 26, 1827 edition of The Times carried the following notice of "the giant dog Neptune," said to be Europe's largest Newf, on exhibit in London:
THE GIANT DOG, NEPTUNE. — The largest and most handsome Newfoundland in Europe is now exhibiting at 135, Oxford-street, near Cavendish-street. His amazing height and bulk, fine symmetry and beautiful marks, joined with his lion-like appearance, cannot fail to excite the greatest admiration. The nobility and gentry who have seen him have invariably admitted him to be unequalled in size and beauty, and a perfect prodigy of the canine species. To be seen from 10 till 9; admittance 1s. N.B. Several fine dogs and whelps of the above breed, with a variety of scarce foreign birds, for sale.
