This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.
In early 1786 The Times serialized a brief comic play entitled The Academicians. In it, one of the characters, Prig, remarks on the unfashionable appearance of another:
Zounds! you must not come in that brown bob to the annual dinner; if your do, the Gallic Duke will certainly mistake your phiz for the head of a Newfoundland puppy. (May 10, 1786)
