[ Low / A Picture Book of Natural History for Young People ]

Low (1797 - 1886) was an English publisher from a family of English publishers and printers (with three generations of them named Sampson Low).

This work (in 2 volumes, birds and quadrupeds) was published in 1858 by Samson Low, Son, & Co. (London). (Although never identified as such, this Sampson Low was actually Sampson Low, Jr, the son of the London printer and publisher Sampson Low. Sampson Low Jr. named his eldest son Sampson Low, and this son was often referred to as Sampson Low Jr., when by modern convention he should have been Sampson Low III. Confused yet? I sure am.)

The entry on Newfoundlands is accompanied by an engraving of Sir Edwin Landseer's 1822 painting The Twa Dogs (uncredited).

The Newfoundland picture and entry appear on pg. 19:

In Newfoundland and Labrador there is a splendid race of dogs which are very serviceable in drawing sledges. They are very fond of the water. These dogs are often brought into England.

Yes, that's it, the full text of the Newf entry.
