George Meredith (1828 - 1909) was an English poet and novelist, one of the earlier Victorian writers with a strong interest in character psychology and what was, for its time, a certain sexual frankness.
This early novel by Meredith, not published in his lifetime, has one slight reference to Newfoundlands:
He whistled to Jane's dog Wayland, a retriever, having Newfoundland relationships, of smithy redness and ruggedness. . . .
