The New York Times is an American daily newspaper which began publishing in 1851 and continues to this day. It has won more Pulitzer Prizes than any other newspaper, and has the 3rd-largest circulation in the United States.


The January 6, 1889, issue carried this note about a purloining Newf:

"Fagin" is one of the principal characters in Charles Dickens' 1838 novel Oliver Twist, who trains young children to pick pockets and commit other crimes. The Faubourg Saint-Antoine was, in the 19th Century, a Paris suburb with something of a shady reputation, including lots of child labor.
