The New York Times is an American daily newspaper which began publishing in 1851 and continues to this day. It has won more Pulitzer Prizes than any other newspaper, and has the 3rd-largest circulation in the United States.
This item appeared in the September 28, 1890, issue, and is basically a slightly re-worked version of a Newf-related anecdote that had appeared multiple times in multiple publications in previous years, the first recounting (to my knowledge) being in Chambers's Miscellany of Useful and Entertaining Tracts" (1845).
