The New York Times is an American daily newspaper which began publishing in 1851 and continues to this day. It has won more Pulitzer Prizes than any other newspaper, and has the 3rd-largest circulation in the United States.
While not all references to Newfs and hydrophobia are included in this section of The Cultured Newf — there are simply too many, and they don't really add to the cultural history of the breed — this mention, in the March 7, 1884, edition, is too good to pass up:
