[ Queen Victoria / Letters ]

Like most Victorians, Queen Victoria was a dedicated letter-writer. A selection of her letters was published as The Letters of Queen Victoria; A Selection from Her Majesty's Correspondence between the Years 1837 and 1861. This 3-volume work was edited by Arthur Christopher Benson and Viscount Esher, and was published in London by Longman & Green in 1907.

Following is the only reference to Newfoundlands in these volumes.

Windsor Castle, 31st October 1843.

The Grand Duke came here last night, and goes away after luncheon, and leaves England on Thursday. He is charmed with all he has seen, and I must say is very amiable and civil. He has got a most charming large dog, called Dragon, like a Newfoundland, only brown and white, with the most expressive eyes imaginable and si bien dressé. (I: 627)
