[ Walker' Hibernian Magazine ]

Walker' Hibernian Magazine, or Compendium of Entertaining Knowledge was a monthly, featuring articles on literary, political, and social topics, published in Dublin from 1771 to 1812.

The February 1804 issue mentions Newfoundlands once, very briefly, in a article entitled "A Chronological list of the Most Remarkable Events of the Year 1803," which makes mention of the April 1803 duel between Captain Macnamara and Colonel Montgomery which was occasioned by their Newfoundlands getting into a fight. This incident is treated elsewhere here at The Cultured Newf in much more detail: see the entries for "The Trial of Captain Macnamara" and The Life of the Right Honourable Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson.

April 6. A duel took place at Chalk-farm, between colonel Montgomery and captain Macnamara, in consequence of a dispute about two Newfoundland dogs: both parties were wounded, but colonel Montgomery only survived a few minutes.
. . . .
22. Captain Macnamara was tried at the Old-Bailey, on a charge of manslaughter, for having killed col. Montgomery in a duel, he was acquitted.
