John Peale on his Favourite Hunter and a Dog
by
George Cole
Cole (1810 - 1883) was a self-taught English painter known for his landscapes and portraits as well as his animal paintings; this blends all of those specialities. Cole was inspired and influenced by the work (and popularity) of Sir Edwin Landseer, among others, and eventually became quite successful, both critically and financially.
Cole's son, George Vicat Cole, was also a painter, one who came to be regarded even more highly than his father.
detail from John Peale on his Favourite Hunter and a Dog
This work should be regarded as only a potential Newfoundland "sighting"; I've not been able to find any information about the dog in this painting, and while it does resemble some dogs which, in the 19th Century, were identified as Newfoundlands, it may well be something else.
