A Hunter and Three Dogs, the Property of William Brewitt, Esq., with a Steam Train and the Church of Kirby Bellars, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, beyond (1852)
by
John Ferneley, Sr.
Ferneley (1782 - 1860) was a English painter of, primarily, hunting scenes, and was extremely successful in his lifetime, much sought after by the landed gentry wishing to commemorate their favorite dogs, horses, and hunts. See also Ferneley's 1823 painting Mr. Pares' Coachman with a Newfoundland Dog here at The Cultured Newf.
detail from A Hunter and Three Dogs
This work, which is also known as Chestnut Hunter & Dogs At Kirby Park, should be regarded as only a potential Newfoundland "sighting," although the large dog in this painting certainly does resemble some dogs which, in the 19th Century, were identified as Newfoundlands.
