lord byron and boatswain
(1807)
by Elizabeth Bridget Pigot

Pigot (1783 - 1866) was an English correspondent and friend of Lord Byron, the British Romantic poet, and an important source for some of the earliest biographies of Byron.

Of most relevance here is that fact that Pigot was a neighbor and friend of the young Lord Byron, spending much time in his company, and in 1807 she wrote a short poem entitled "The Wonderful History of Lord Byron and his Dog." She also illustrated the poem with the watercolors reproduced on this page.

While Pigot was not a trained artist, her renderings of Boatswain, Byron's Newfoundland, not only correspond to Tomson's expert rendering of Boatswain but catch the bond that Byron, a great lover of animals, felt for his Newf. Pigot's book was never published; she created the volume herself, hand-sewing the pages to bind them.
