Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
Surely the large black-and-white dog lying in front of the fire is a Landseer Newfoundland.
