[ Ballantyne / Rivers of Ice ]
R. M. Ballantyne (1825 - 1894) was a popular and prolific Scottish writer of adventure tales for boys, and was a significant influence on Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne, from a family of writers and publishers, was also a painter of some note.
Ballantyne's treatment of life among the Alps, first published in 1875 (London: Nisbet) and fully titled Rivers of Ice; A Tale Illustrative of Alpine Adventure and Glacier Action, mentions a Newfoundland only once, and that metaphorically:
"I will join you heartily in that," said Lewis, turning to the man of science, who stood regarding the Captain with an amiable smile, as a huge Newfoundland dog might regard a large mastiff; "but why is our proposed excursion to the Jardin to be altered?" (Ch. 10)
