Ellis Parker Butler (1869 - 1937) was an American author and banker, a prolific creator of novels, short stories, and poetry.


That Pup was first published in 1907 (New York: McClure) and had several reprints. This comic account of the rambunctious life of a dog has only one reference to Newfoundlands, which occurs as the dog's owner and his friends are trying to determine what breeds contributed to his dog. One of them speculates as follows:

That dog is a pure cross between a Siberian wolfhound and a Newfoundland. You treat that dog right and you'll have a fortune in him. Why, a pure Siberian wolfhound is worth a thousand dollars, and a good—a really good Newfoundland, mind you—is worth two thousand, and you've got both in one dog. That's three thousand dollars' worth of dog!”



Rather curious logic, of course....
