[ Dogdom ]
A monthly American magazine (Battle Creek, Michigan), edited by F. E. Bechmann, devoted "Exclusively to Dogs, Dog Fanciers, Bench Shows, and Field Trials." Early 20th Century.
The May, 1921, issue carried yet another early-20th-Century remark on the current scarcity of Newfoundlands:
Three Newfoundland dogs have arrived in this country from England. This is more or less an important matter in these times when the noble bred [sic] is very scarce here. These two dogs and a bitch came on the Adriatic. It is believed the strangers were for Mr. Brown, c/o A. W. Bishop and Co., New York. The dogs afterwards were sent to Worcester, Mass., so it seems. Whether these are white or black Newfoundlands, is not known. The fact of the importation is, however, not without considerable interest. (130)
The idea that the Newfoundland was a vanishing breed was touched on in a surprising number of magazine articles and books in the early years of the 20th Century. For discussion of the idea, see this article here at The Cultured Newf.
