[ Dogdom ]
A monthly American magazine (Battle Creek, Michigan), edited by F. E. Bechmann, devoted "Exclusively to Dogs, Dog Fanciers, Bench Shows, and Field Trials." Early 20th Century.
The June, 1912, issue featured an article on the popularity of English bulldogs that began with these sentences:
The styles of the "dog fashionable" vary, as the cycles of time transpire. Thirty years ago the Newfoundland, the Spitzbergen and the hunting varieties — the pointer and setter — were very much in evidence. Today the Newfoundland and Spitz are almost obsolete, and the hunting strains are relegated to the kennel and the field. (968)
The idea that the Newfoundland was a vanishing breed was touched on in a surprising number of magazine articles and books in the early years of the 20th Century. For discussion of the idea, see this article here at The Cultured Newf.
