[ Edward Jesse / Anecdotes of Dogs ]

Jesse (1780 - 1868) was an English writer and editor, principally on topics of natural history. His earlier works, Gleanings in Natural History (1835), and Scenes and Tales of Country Life (1844) are also treated here at The Cultured Newf.

This illustrated discussion of various dog breeds was first published by R. Bentley in 1846; the text presented here is taken from the edition published in London by Henry G. Bohn, 1858, which, Jesse writes in his Introduction to this edition, is "considerably enlarged, both in matter and plates, and, to suit the taste of the age, is presented in a cheap and popular form." (The first edition ran to 336 pages; this expanded edition has 491 pages.)
