[ Little / Dr. Little's Dog Book ]
George Watson Little (? - ?) was an American veterinarian and writer on veterinary topics.
This book was first published in 1924 (New York: R. M. McBride) with revised editions in 1934 and 1937.
Newfoundlands are mentioned in this book's section on feeding and diets for different breeds, which are grouped by size (Newfs of course being in the largest weight class, 80 - 210 lbs.).
The only other mention of Newfs occurs in the chapter "What Dogs to Give and What Gifts to Give Dogs":
Other splendid dogs for the country, especially where there are children, are the St. Bernard and Newfoundland, which are noted for their good dispositions. Both of these dogs are of powerful build, often standing as high as three feet and weighing one to two hundred pounds or more. The St. Bernard is usually reddish-yellow and white or white with reddish-yellow markings mixed with black. The Newfoundland is usually all black or black and white. Since there are fewer kennels for these dogs and they are not so much in demand as collies, their price is somewhat higher, puppies seldom being for sale for less than $75 or $100. (306)
(One hundred dollars in 1924 is, roughly, worth about $1,500US in 2021.
