[ Longfellow / "The Open Window"]

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807 - 1882) was an American educator, poet, and translator. While much of his writing is now considered overly sentimental, he was extremely popular in his time, both in America and Europe. This short poem, which contains the only reference to Newfoundlands I've found in all of Longfellow, is part of a collection entitled By the Fireside.

This poem has a single reference to Newfoundlands:

The large Newfoundland house-dog
Was standing by the door;
He looked for his little playmates,
Who would return no more.
