A Newfoundland Dog (1873)
attr. to Richard Ansdell

Ansdell (1815 - 1885) was arguably the most important Victorian animal painter after Sir Edwin Landseer; his works consistently met with both critical and popular success.

This work bears a suspiciously strong resemblance to the head of the Newfoundland in Sir Edwin Landseer's A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society (and its knock-off My Dog), and does not strike me as characteristic of Ansdell's work. I'm no art expert, but I can't help but express significant reservations about the attribution of this work. In fact, if I had to bet, I'd wager a large sum that Ansdell had absolutely nothing to do with this painting.
