James Bateman
This James Bateman (1815 - 1849) was an English painter, though is not to be confused with James Bateman (1893 - 1959) the English painter, or James Bateman (1811 – 1897) the noted English horticulturalist. Perhaps because of this abundance of James Batemans, there is not much information about the James Bateman who painted the above work. Which is a bit odd, given that our James Bateman was a friend of Sir Edwin Landseer, apparently even using Landseer's studio at times, and that although he was self-taught he was talented enough to exhibit at some prestigious venues during his short career, including at the Royal Academy. Most of Bateman's works depict sporting, animal, and landscape subjects.
Bateman also painted another work with a Newf, Give a Poor Dog a Bone — and the fact a print of that work was published under the title A Distinguished Member of the Benevolent Society may well be a nod to Bateman's association with Landseer. The Newfoundland in Give a Poor Dog a Bone very much appears to be the same Newf shown in the painting above. Check out that other Bateman painting here at The Cultured Newf.
