Faed (1826 - 1900) was a Scottish painter known primarily for his domestic scenes, particularly of lower-class Scots; his works met with both critical and popular success. (Obviously this painting here is of a well-to-do Scottish family.)
Above is a detail from the painting, showing what may be a Landseer Newfoundland, although the dog's relatively small size, longer muzzle, and light build could be construed as arguing against that.
