Nelson (1901)
by
Winifred Kelly
Winifred Ethelwyn Kelly (1880 - 1921) was an Australian artist.
This portrait is of a Newfoundland dog named Nelson (no doubt after the famed British admiral Lord Nelson who oversaw the defeat of Napoleon's navy) who became something of a hero during the Boer War. He was the regimental mascot of South Australia's 1st Contingent, and was even briefly captured by the Boers. (The "RHA" on Nelson's collar stands for "Royal Horses Artillery>")
You can read more about Nelson and his military career here at the Australian War Memorial and also here at the Newfoundland Club of America's website, which features some photographs of Nelson.
