Dogs on Coast (date unknown)
by
George Morland
Morland (1763 - 1804) was an English painter known primarily for his animal paintings. A gifted painter and something of a prodigy, Morland struggled with financial hardship for most of his adult life.
The standing dog in the picture may well be a Landseer Newfoundland, despite the prick ears; compare this to the Newfoundland illustration to Sydenham Edwards' Cynographia Britannica (1801), also at this website, as well as to other early images and descriptions of the breed.
