A Bay Hunter in a Landscape with a Dog
(oil on canvas, 25" x 30")
by
Francis Sartorius
Sartorius (1734-1804) was an English painter of horses and hunting subjects primarily, from a family of painters: his father, his son, and his grandson (Francis Sartorius the Younger) were all accomplished animal and sporting painters. Francis Sartorius (the Elder) was particularly known for his portraits of famous race horses, and he achieved considerable financial and critical success.
While the dog in this painting of course does not look much like a modern Newfoundland, compare it to some of the other very early depictions of Newfs.
