Interior with Three Dogs (date unknown)
(oil on panel, 11" x 15.2")
by
Wouterus Verschuur
Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
Is the standing dog a 'mis-marked' (by modern standards, anyway) Landseer Newfoundland? Hard to say, though I'm inclined to think not. Verschuur seems to have used this same dog as a model for several paintings, which I've included here just to play it safe; it appears this was Verschuur's own dog.
