Painter's Dog (date unknown)
(oil on panel, 11" x 15.2")
by
Wouterus Verschuur
Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
No wonder this same dog shows up in several paintings by Verschuur — it was his own. Could it be a 'mis-marked' (by modern standards, anyway) Landseer Newfoundland, or Landseer mix? Hard to say.
