Reading Man with Two Dogs (date unknown)
by
Wouterus Verschuur
Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
Are either of these dogs Newfoundlands, or Newf mixes? Hard to say for sure. The white dog appears to be the same one that appears in a number of Verschuur paintings, and was his own personal pet. The black-and-white dog appears to be the same dog that appears in another Verschuur painting entitled Setters at the Pond.
