Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.


The large dog on the right may be a Newf, given its size and given that Verschuur painted a number of other dogs that appear to be Newfoundlands as they were known then:
